NKT building the world’s largest high-voltage offshore cable factory

To meet the increasing demand for high-voltage power cables, NKT is currently investing in a new cable-laying vessel and establishing the world’s largest factory for high-voltage subsea cables in Sweden.

To address the growing demand for high-voltage power cables, NKT is investing around EUR1.3 billion in a state-of-the-art cable-laying vessel and constructing the world’s largest high-voltage subsea cable factory in Karlskrona, Sweden.

Darren Fennell, Executive Vice President HV Solutions Karlskrona, said at the end of 2024: “As the year comes to an end, it is time to reflect. This year, we made significant progress on the investment at our Swedish high-voltage factory in Karlskrona. With milestones like our third extrusion tower reaching 200 metres, the second tallest in the Nordics, and the progress of our new cable-laying vessel, NKT Eleonora, we continue to expand our production and installation capacity. This allows us to meet the increasing demand for power cable systems.”

Power cables – the backbone of the global energy infrastructure

“The need for a reliable energy infrastructure is becoming increasingly important to ensure security of supply and support the transition to renewable energy,” said Fennell.

“Our cable systems play a vital role in connecting regions, ensuring that renewable electricity reaches those who need it. This work is essential to provide the necessary infrastructure for a low-carbon future.”

Local job creation

“This investment will also create around 500 new jobs, further strengthening our position both globally and within the local community in Karlskrona,” added Fennell.

“Here, NKT is already one of the largest employers, and we look forward to continuing our growth supporting the local community.

“At NKT, we are committed to playing a crucial role in the transition to renewable energy. This investment brings us closer to our goal of leading in sustainable energy solutions.

“I am proud to see the progress of one of the largest construction projects in Sweden, especially given its complexity. The milestones so far are the result of strong collaboration between our dedicated employees, suppliers and consultants.

“I am looking forward to another eventful year in 2025.”
