Technology to benefit public transport users in Chile

Juan Carlos Muñoz, Chilean Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, has announced an unprecedented benefit implemented for users of the public transport system in Santiago, Chile.

It is called Maximum Monthly Amount, and it works as a measure that limits the spending of people who use public transport and pay with QR codes. It means that when passengers reach US$38,000 in trips, the rest of the transfers in a calendar month are automatically free.

It is an incentive for those who use the system the most and applies only to the adult rate. The innovative measure started working in parallel with the US$10 increase in the rate from August.

Muñoz said: “We know that any increase financially affects families, no matter how small. At the same time, we have always said that rates can not remain without adjustment forever. For this reason, we are working on concrete action to support those who use the Red Mobility system the most, so we are presenting the Maximum Monthly Amount. After US$38,000 in trips paid with QR, the rest of the transfers will be free.”
