Brazilian universities dominate the highest-ranking institutions for computer science programs in Latin America, according to a recent US News and World report ranking.
The report ranks six Brazilian institutions in the regional top 20 for computer science degrees.
Those six are: University of São Paulo, State University of Campinas, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais.
Chile’s Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and Universidad de Chile are also ranked highly.
Three Mexican universities make the list: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM), Instituto Politécnico Nacional (PN) and Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM).
The table shows the University of Buenos Aires ranked 14th globally and emerging as a top choice for aspiring software professionals.

The report reflects LATAM’s status as one of the world’s most promising tech hubs as the region outpacing others to become a top destination for developers – according to a 2023 report by HackerRank.
US News and World attributes Brazil’s specific success to a strong research profile, the evidence for which is referenced in high research outputs, patent production and R&D spending.
